From Vulgar Latin *gracla (compare Occitan gralha, Italian gracchia), syncopated form of Late Latin grācula (“female jackdaw”) (compare French grolle), feminine form of Latin grāculus (compare Spanish grajo), from Proto-Indo-European *greh₂-k- (“croak”). Doublet of graula.
