Inherited from Proto-Slavic *gnestì (stem *gnet-)[1], from Proto-Balto-Slavic *gnestei, from Proto-Indo-European *gnét-ti, from *gnet-[1]. Cognate with Czech hníst[1], Serbo-Croatian гњѐсти/gnjèsti[1][2], Russian гнести́ (gnestí, “to oppress”)[1] and Old English cnedan[1].
