From Proto-Celtic *gli-na-, from *glei.[1]Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gleh₁y- (“sticky, liquid”).[2] Equivalent to glŷn (“sticking, adhering”) + -u. Cognate with Cornish glena, Middle Breton en-glenaff and Old Irish glenaid.
