From Malay abdas, from Classical Malay ابدس (abdas), from Persian آبدست (âbdest) of آب (âb, “water”) + دست (dast, “hand”).[1] Cognate of Javanese ꦲꦧ꧀ꦢꦱ꧀ (abdas), Sundanese ᮃᮘ᮪ᮓᮞ᮪ (abdas).
