From Proto-Germanic *gaskapjaną. Cognate with Old Saxon giskeppian, Old High German giscaffan, Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐍃𐌺𐌰𐍀𐌾𐌰𐌽 (gaskapjan). Equivalent to ġe- + sċieppan.
