From Old Swedish fælaþ, from fæ (“cattle”) (Swedish fä) and possibly a derivation of liþa (“to go, to walk”) (Swedish lida (“to pass (of time)”)), or possibly from a word related to Icelandic láð (“land”). Compare Danish fælled.
