Etymology 1

From Proto-Italic *feiðos, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeydʰ-os, from *bʰeydʰ-. Same root as fīdō, fidēs, fīdus, and Proto-Germanic *bīdaną. Perhaps a corruption from an o-stem.
