Borrowed from Swedish fjortis (immature teenager), from fjorton (fourteen) (with the suffix -is, from Latin -is), from Old Swedish fiughertān, fiughurtan (fourteen), from Old Norse fjugurtán, fjugrtán, of fjórtán (fourteen), from Proto-Germanic *fedurtehun (fourteen), from both *fedwōr (four), from *petwṓr, from *kʷetwṓr of Proto-Indo-European *kʷetwóres (four) + and from *tehun (ten), from *tehunt, from Proto-Indo-European *déḱm̥t (ten). Equivalent to fjorten + -is.
