Etymology
From Middle French ficher, from Old French fichier, from Vulgar Latin *fīccāre, syncopated from *figicāre, frequentative based on from Latin fīgere (“fasten, fix”). The "give a damn" sense is a minced oath of foutre (“to fuck”).
