Translations

Noun

Faroese (countable and uncountable, plural Faroese)

  1. (countable) A person from the Faroe Islands, Faroe Islander or Faeroe Islander
  2. (uncountable) The language of the Faroe Islands, closely related to Icelandic, and more distantly to Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish

Usage notes

As with other nationalities formed with -ese, the countable singular noun in reference to a person (as in "I am a Faroese", "writing about Faroese cuisine as a Faroese") is uncommon and often taken as incorrect. In its place, the adjective is used, by itself (as in "I am Faroese") or with a word like person, man, or woman ("writing about Faroese cuisine as a Faroese person").

Synonyms

  • Faroish
  • (person): Faroe Islander
