- The ex-dividend date is three business days before the record date. Ex-dividend means without the dividend. The ex-dividend date convention assigns the dividend to the buyer or seller as follows: A buyer in a transaction that occurs before the ex-dividend date is entitled to receive the dividend and the seller is not; a seller in a transaction that occurs on or after the ex-dividend date is entitled to keep the dividend.
