Etymology

Frankish *sciuhan (to dread, shun, avoid), from Proto-Germanic *skiuhwaną, *skiwaną (to frighten). Cognate with Old High German sciuhen (to frighten, make fearful), Dutch schuwen (to caution). More at shy.
