From Old Galician and Old Portuguese enpãada, enpanada (13th century: Cantigas de Santa Maria), from *empãar (“to put into bread”). Perhaps under the influence of empanar (“to conceal”, literally “to put into a cloth”). Cognate with Portuguese empada.
