Etymology
From el + dialectal gün (“foreign people”), ultimately from Proto-Turkic *ēl (“realm, people”) and *kün (“foreign people”). Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (elgün), Karakhanid [script needed] (el kün), etc.[1]
