Alternative forms
- aëtheogamous
Etymology
aetheogam + -ous[1]
Pronunciation
- (Received Pronunciation) enPR: ā.ē'thēŏʹgəməs, IPA(key): /eɪˌiːθiːˈɒɡəməs/,[1]
Adjective
aetheogamous (not comparable)
- (botany)[1] Of the nature of an aetheogam.
Usage notes
- Being ultimately derived from the two vowels ἀή (aḗ) (alpha-eta: aē), rather than the diphthong αἰ (ai) (alpha-iota: ai), the initial ae- of aetheogamous can only properly be written as two separate letters (ae), with a diaeresis atop the e (as aëtheogamous) being optional; the spellings *ætheogamous and *etheogamous are, therefore, erroneous.
Synonyms
- cryptogamous
