Likely from Proto-Norse *ᚨᛁᚾᚨᛚᚨᛁᛒᚨᛉ (*ainalaibaz) or *ᚨᛁᚹᚨᛚᚨᛁᛒᚨᛉ (*aiwalaibaz). From Proto Germanic Proto-Germanic *ainaz (“one”) or *aiwaz (“always, eternity”), and Proto-Germanic *laibō (“remnant”) with added masculine -r (akin to -lífr m from líf n).[1][2]
