From Old French (and Middle French) deslier, from Vulgar Latin disligāre, present active infinitive of disligō, from Latin dis- + ligō (“tie, bind”). Compare Occitan desligar, Catalan deslligar, Portuguese desligar, Spanish desliar, Friulian disleâ, Italian slegare, Romanian dezlega.
