Borrowed from English diphtheria, from French diphthérie, coined 1857 by Pierre Bretonneau; from Ancient Greekδιφθέρα (diphthéra, “prepared hide, leather”), for the tough membrane that forms in the throat. Bretonneau earlier used diphthérite, from which diphtheritis.
