First attested as theothorne in 838. Compound derived from either Proto-Germanic *þeudô- (“people, mass”) or Old Dutch Theudo (“a personal name”) and horn (“jutting piece of land”). A different etymology splits the toponym into Proto-Germanic *þeud-þorn (“thorny burgh for the people”). Compare Dieteren.
