Etymology

First attested as in daginghem in the late 10th century. Originally a compound of either Old Dutch Dago (“a personal name”) or Dano (“a personal name”) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ing- and heem (“home, settlement”). The second element was gradually replaced with kamp (“enclosed piece of land”). Compare Breklenkamp, Greffelkamp, Gölenkamp, Haftenkamp and Höcklenkamp.
