From Proto-Mon-Khmer *sguut ~ *sgat ~ *(s)gət (“to be cut short, to cut”); cognate with Arem [kùːt] ("to chop, to cut short"), Old Mon sgūt (“to be interrupted, cut short”), Khmer ស្កាត់ (skat, “to interrupt, to take a short cut”) and Khasi kut (“to come to an end”).
