From French Copte, from Egyptian Arabic قُفْط, قُبْط (“Copts”), back-formation from قُفْطِيّ (“Coptic”), قِفْطِيّ (“(same)”), قُبْطِيّ (“(same)”), قِبْطِيّ (“(same)”), from Coptic ⲅⲩⲡⲧⲓⲟⲥ (guptios, “Egyptian”), ⲕⲩⲡⲧⲁⲓⲟⲥ (kuptaios, “Egyptian”), from Late Ancient Greek Αἰγύπτιος (Aigúptios), from earlier Αἴγυπτος (Aíguptos).
