Etymology
Late 19th century borrowing from French adénoïde, from New Latin adenoīdēs, from Ancient Greek ᾰ̓δενοειδής (adenoeidḗs, “glandular”), from ᾰ̓δήν (adḗn, “gland”) + -ο- (-o-) + -ειδής (-eidḗs, “-oid, -like”). The noun is derived from ellipsis of tumeur adénoïde (“glandular tumor”).
