Late Latin borrowing from Ancient Greek κολαφίζω (kolaphízō, “I slap, buffett”), from κόλαφος (kólaphos, “a slap”) (whence Classical colaphus) from κόνδυλος (kóndulos, “knuckle”) (whence Classical condylus).
